Sterile neutrinos with eV masses in cosmology -- how disfavoured exactly?
We study cosmological models that contain sterile neutrinos with eV-range
masses as suggested by reactor and short-baseline oscillation data. We confront
these models with both precision cosmological data (probing the CMB decoupling
epoch) and light-element abundances (probing the BBN epoch). In the minimal
LambdaCDM model, such sterile neutrinos are strongly disfavoured by current
data because they contribute too much hot dark matter. However, if the
cosmological framework is extended to include also additional relativistic
degrees of freedom -- beyond the three standard neutrinos and the putative
sterile neutrinos, then the hot dark matter constraint on the sterile states is
considerably relaxed. A further improvement is achieved by allowing a dark
energy equation of state parameter w<-1. While BBN strongly disfavours extra
radiation beyond the assumed eV-mass sterile neutrino, this constraint can be
circumvented by a small nu_e degeneracy. Any model containing eV-mass sterile
neutrinos implies also strong modifications of other cosmological parameters.
Notably, the inferred cold dark matter density can shift up by 20 to 75%
relative to the standard LambdaCDM value.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, v2: minor changes, matches version accepted for

Black holes as antimatter factories
We consider accretion of matter onto a low mass black hole surrounded by
ionized medium. We show that, because of higher mobility of protons than
electrons, the black hole would acquire positive electric charge. If the black
hole's mass is about or below g, the electric field at the horizon
can reach the critical value which leads to vacuum instability and
electron--positron pair production by the Schwinger mechanism. Since the
positrons are ejected by the emergent electric field, while electrons are
back--captured, the black hole operates as an antimatter factory which
effectively converts protons into positrons.Comment: 5 pages, no figure. v2: with discussion section not included in the

Cosmological Implications of Neutrinos
The lectures describe several cosmological effects produced by neutrinos.
Upper and lower cosmological limits on neutrino mass are derived. The role that
neutrinos may play in formation of large scale structure of the universe is
described and neutrino mass limits are presented. Effects of neutrinos on
cosmological background radiation and on big bang nucleosynthesis are
discussed. Limits on the number of neutrino flavors and mass/mixing are given.Comment: 41 page, 7 figures; lectures presented at ITEP Winter School,

Constraining the electric charges of some astronomical bodies in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes and generic r^-2-type power-law potentials from orbital motions
We put model-independent, dynamical constraints on the net electric charge Q
of some astronomical and astrophysical objects by assuming that their exterior
spacetimes are described by the Reissner-Nordstroem metric, which induces an
additional potential U_RN \propto Q^2 r^-2. Our results extend to other
hypothetical power-law interactions inducing extra-potentials U_pert = r^-2 as
well (abridged).Comment: LaTex2e, 16 pages, 3 figures, no tables, 128 references. Version
